Description/Duties:

This position is the Program Manager for the Renewable Carbon Resources (RCR) subprogram of the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO). The subprogram works with public and private partners to develop innovative technologies and conduct crosscutting analyses that can sustainably expand the availability and use of renewable carbon resources, including biomass and wastes, for the production of biofuels and renewable chemicals and materials in the United States. This work will help researchers realize the potential of the domestic bioeconomy capable of sustainably producing and using a billion tons of renewable carbon resources per year. The project portfolio will include projects from academia, the DOE National Laboratories, and industry. The incumbent will manage the RCR subprogram and help to define the multi-year R&D vision and key funding opportunities to help achieve subprogram and BETO goals. BETO is looking for a dynamic, innovative team leader whose responsibilities will include:

  • Developing long-term goals and objectives and establishing specific requirements and schedules for conducting research and analysis leading to cost effective, sustainable production of renewable carbon resources for use in biofuel, bioproduct, or carbon drawdown applications.
  • Developing, justifying, and allocating the annual budget for the subprogram, assuring plans and funding requirements fully support and are consistent with legislative mandate and DOE's goals and objectives.
  • Preparing reports and maintaining records of work accomplishments and administrative information, as required, and coordinating the preparation, presentation, and communication of work-related information to the Director/Deputy Director. 
  • Representing BETO and presenting at relevant technical conferences and events.
  • Supervising a team of professional staff.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required to Perform the Work/Specialized Experience:

  • Expertise and knowledge in bioenergy technologies sufficient to direct the development and implementation of activities to improve the research, development, commercialization, and adoption of these technologies in the United States.
  • Responsibility and authority to plan, schedule, and carry out team activities.
  • Expertise and knowledge in bioenergy technologies sufficient to represent BETO to the DOE National Laboratories and other stakeholders and partners. 
  • Skills in oral and written communication to communicate with a variety of organizations, agencies, and stakeholders.

Additional Details:

Occasional multi-day travel will be required, including periodic travel between DOE headquarters and the Golden Field Office (in Golden, Colorado). Financial disclosure is required, and incumbent may be required to pass a background investigation.
