October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and here at DOE’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER), we understand how important it is to ensure cybersecurity is embedded across all U.S. energy infrastructure. For us, cybersecurity is national security. A widespread disruption to the energy sector – which all other critical infrastructure sectors rely on to operate – could impact emergency services, running water, the financial sector, and more.

That’s why CESER is advancing mitigation and resilience measures to protect critical energy infrastructure and the digital supply chain. And now, as our grid’s assets evolve to more distributed energy resources (e.g., wind, solar) and our adversaries' capabilities evolve, the U.S. energy sector is faced with a new set of cyber challenges.

As Sector Risk Management Agency (SRMA) for the energy sector, CESER is charged with securing our nation’s energy infrastructure against all risks and hazards, including cyber threats. CESER is uniquely positioned to collect sector-wide industry requirements, collect actionable cyber threat intelligence to sector partners, enhance cyber coordination among government and industry, and provide technical expertise to develop and test cyber mitigation approaches.

Cybersecurity At Work

#Cybersecurity is a year-round effort and should be organizations’ first considerations – whether they’re developing new technologies or buying new devices and services from other organizations.

At CESER, we understand cybersecurity is a 24/7 job that requires an extreme level of collaboration. So whether we’re working with stakeholders to embed cybersecurity into emerging renewable technologies or conducting regular cyber preparedness exercises across government and industry, we are always considering cyber resilience to ensure a reliable and secure energy supply to millions of  Americans every day.
