Microgrids serve as an effective platform for integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) and can reduce costs and emissions while increasing the reliability and resilience of the nation’s electricity system.

The value of microgrids is further enhanced with issuance of FERC Order 2222, which allows DERs that are aggregated and optimized in microgrids to participate in wholesale energy markets, and take advantage of increased benefits through expanded revenue streams.

As climate-related natural disasters become more frequent and severe, along with greater electrification, microgrids will serve as increasingly valuable resources in support of power system resilience.
