While many high school seniors and college students are enjoying the summer rays, those engaged with NNSA’s Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (MSIPP) are enjoying the unique opportunity to serve in internships throughout the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).
The NSE, comprised of eight labs, plants, and sites across the United States, has engaged more deeply with MSIPP to better support a diverse, skilled, and energetic set of students with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills to enhance the Nation’s security.
“We’re thrilled to have new students at NNSA and our labs, plants, and sites this summer,” said Frank Lowery, NNSA’s Associate Administrator for Management and Budget. “The passion and energy that the MSIPP students bring to the table in all kinds of STEM fields allows them to make direct and immediate contributions to the mission. Once they see what we have to offer – a mix of brilliant, dedicated people taking on our Nation’s toughest security challenges at world-class facilities – I know they’ll consider the NSE as a future career choice.”
The more than 230 interns participating this summer – both virtual and in person – come from a range of critical study areas including electrical, mechanical, and systems engineering; health physics; nanoscience; cybersecurity; and intelligence analysis.
The interns will work on projects aligned to the NSE’s mission supplemented with other learning and development opportunities. For example, during their internships, they will also participate in webinars focused on NNSA and its national security mission, as well as topics on innovation, diversity, clean energy, communication, and technical skills. It is a stimulating, fast-paced environment designed to prepare them for careers critical to national security. It is an amazing way to spend the summer… and they’ll even have time to catch a few rays.
