The Department of Energy held a series of workshops to receive input on the approaches and activities for the Energy Storage Grand Challenge (ESGC) initiative - a comprehensive program designed to accelerate the development, commercialization, and utilization of next-generation energy storage technologies and sustain American global leadership in energy storage.

The Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) hosted a manufacturing workshop on March 16 that addressed the challenges and the opportunities for U.S. manufacturing of a broad approach to energy storage opportunities (thermal, electrochemical, industrial processes, devices, and systems) with the aim of informing the DOE on the latest trends, the R&D needs, and the role DOE can play in developing solutions. The workshop featured keynote speakers and breakout sessions to ensure that participants had an opportunity to learn about ESGC and to provide their thoughts.

The workshop provided an overview of ESGC and an overview of DOE’s lithium battery manufacturing and supply chain efforts.
