The Feed Materials Production Center’s manufacturing ended in 1989 and the site’s mission changed to environmental remediation. Environmental sampling, analysis, facility demolition, waste disposal, and a close collaboration with the community and regulators returned the site to a natural state.

The visitors center is located near the center of today’s 1050-acre Fernald Preserve, which opened to the public as an undeveloped park with an emphasis on wildlife in 2008.
