Project Description
Introduction
The Hoopa Valley Tribe is located in remote area about 45 miles from the nearest city. There is not much to keep the youth busy. The tribe purchased a 3,672-square-foot metal building and dedicated it to be used as a youth center. The tribe has experienced a high energy cost to operate the building in the past due to the buildings' inefficient design. The building had no wall insulation, no air conditioning, an inadequate propane heater, three separate electrical sub-panels, and wiring which was inefficient for the tribe's needs.
Goals and Objectives
To improve the energy efficiency of the youth center, as well as the equipment and appliances contained therein.
Project Actions and Resultant Data
The youth center opened its doors on Dec. 14, 1996. Although the tribe had many set backs during the renovation phase, the project has been a success overall. The new youth center now houses a video room, fitness room, multi-purpose room, and a snack bar. The tribe was able to properly equip the building with the necessities to assure a safe and comfortable environment for the youth.
Detailed work plans, equipment and materials lists, and schedules for each planned building modification were completed and reviewed by a qualified energy consultant and interested parties. The soliciting of the bids and issuing purchase orders for equipment, materials, and the delivery to the youth center has been completed.
Results, Conclusions, Findings, and Recommendations
The Hoopa Valley youth now have a safe place to go. The Hoopa Valley was in great need of an energy efficient youth center. Now the tribe's youth can come to a place that will be warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
