NNSA Nature Photography Day

The large-flowered fiddleneck has two forms: pin flowers and thrum flowers. This photograph, taken at Site 300, the 7,000 acre experimental test facility operated by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, shows the thrum flower morph in which the anthers extend from the tube of the flower while the stigma is enclosed within it.

This hummingbird has built her nest on a tree inside the open-air enclosed patio of Building 543, which houses, among other offices, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Human Resources department.
