
Steven J. Walsh joined the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Indian Energy as a physical scientist in September 2024. Duty-stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, Steven serves as a technical project officer, administering financial assistance awards to American Indian Nations, Alaska Native Villages, and Tribal and intertribal organizations.
Before joining the Office of Indian Energy, Steven spent the previous 9 years working in the private sector for one of the largest renewable energy and electrical contractor businesses in Alaska. Steven designed, planned, and installed many renewable energy systems, electrical infrastructure improvements, and critical power backup solutions. In addition to conducting installations, he also provided financial analysis of clean energy projects to help his clients understand system performance and return on investment. Steven also assisted clients in grant opportunities and other federal incentives such as the clean energy tax credit.
Prior to working in clean energy and infrastructure, Steven worked as an atmospheric scientist and research technician deploying low-energy-consuming solar-photovoltaic-battery-based instrumentation for environmental remote sensing. He has worked in and travelled to the northern edge of Alaska and internationally in the Arctic.
Steven holds a Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences from the University of Alaska Anchorage and a North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners’ PV Technical Sales and Design certification.
