This week, Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy (ASFE) Steven Winberg attended CERA Week in Houston, Texas to discuss the Office of Fossil Energy’s (FE) progress in maximizing the United States’ use of domestic resources. ASFE Winberg joined other Department of Energy (DOE) representatives at the conference, including Secretary Rick Perry, Deputy Secretary Dan Brouillette, and Under Secretary Mark W. Menezes and Under Secretary Paul M. Dabbar
CERA Week is an annual conference held in Houston, Texas that brings together industry and government leaders, policymakers, and key energy stakeholders to discuss a wide range of issues related to building a strong global energy future.
At the conference, ASFE Winberg participated in several events, including a panel on enhanced oil recovery (EOR). While on the panel, ASFE Winberg discussed the potential of EOR through carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and DOE’s efforts to expand CCUS technology development and deployment.
He also joined Secretary Perry in a strategic dialogue with government representatives from Poland. During the conversation, ASFE Winberg explored opportunities for increasing coal plant efficiencies and expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade with Poland.
ASFE Winberg shared how expanding America’s LNG exports to Poland could be beneficial to both nations. “The U.S. government and American companies stand ready to provide Poland—and other countries, as well—with a reliable, secure, and diverse source of energy,” he said. “We welcome the opportunity to help Poland develop the capacity to import our energy resources, but also to provide the experience to deploy leading-edge technologies and infrastructure that can use these fuels.”
He also discussed FE’s work to develop the next generation of coal technologies through its Coal FIRST (Flexible, Innovative, Resilient, Small, and Transformative) Initiative. Since Poland is a major producer and consumer of coal, ASFE Winberg said “Poland could be an important partner for us to develop these critically needed technologies.”
