Name and what you do at EM?

My name is Sean Doyle and I am the IT/cyber security manager for the EM Nevada Program.

What branch did you serve in; when; where stationed? How many years of service?

I served in the Navy for nine years from 1990-1999, mostly in San Diego, California.

Most memorable event/moment during your service?

I was on the USS Coronado (Eastern Pacific Flagship) attached to the Commander Third Fleet (ComThirdFlt) unit. The ship was going west to Japan and the USS Constellation was coming east. The Russians were intrigued why the flagship and the USS Constellation were in the same area, and they sent a Russian MiG to investigate. The Russian MiG and a U.S. Navy F18 engaged in a dogfight.

How has your military service helped prepare you for the job you do in EM?

It prepared me to become a leader. I got my first supervision job managing the special intelligence communications division within ComThirdFlt. When I got out of the Navy I worked for the Department of the Navy as a federal employee, and from there we had a partnership with the Navy post-graduate school and I trained with them to do cybersecurity assessments.

When did you begin working for EM and what got you interested in the cleanup mission?

I’ve been with EM since February 2021, so it’ll be three years in February. What interested me most about the mission was the opportunity to manage both the cybersecurity and IT aspects of the job. At my previous role, I was only with IT.

To me, Veterans Day is an opportunity to remember all who have served and died for this country. My time in the military helped me to be more disciplined; it provided structure in life for day-to-day operations. In the Navy, I dealt with top secret communications as a Navy cryptologist, and that prepared me to be part of the national security mission for this great country.
