Stephen G. Hoffman serves as Deputy Manager of the Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office, where he assists the Manager in leading the field office staff of approximately 50 federal and support contract personnel with an annual budget of $220 million. He also oversees all human resource and administrative functions, including administration of a legacy waste cleanup contract with a 700-person workforce.
Mr. Hoffman joined the Department of Energy Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office in October 2016. He is a retired Air Force Colonel, culminating over 30 years of service as Commander of the 1,500 person Mission Support Group responsible for all infrastructure, human resources, communications, logistics, security and contracting at Beale Air Force Base, CA. During his Air Force career he was assigned at 12 different locations including two tours at the Pentagon. He deployed three times in support of combat: 1999 for Operation Allied Force - Air War over Serbia and 2007 and 2013 for Operation Enduring Freedom in Kabul and Herat Afghanistan respectively, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star along with numerous other Medals.
In his time at Department of Energy, Mr. Hoffman worked closely with the Field Office Manager to successfully add resources to the Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office through personally engaging federal and state elected officials as well as local stakeholders. These efforts resulted in a 65% increase in federal workforce and a 20% increase in annual funding. Mr. Hoffman then applied those additional resources toward the resolution of New Mexico’s most compelling nuclear challenge: remediation of improperly packaged transuranic waste drums. For this accomplishment the National Nuclear Security Administration recognized his team with an Excellence Award. Additionally, Mr. Hoffman drove procedural adherence across the entire organization to ensure waste streams of this nature were properly handled without risk to workers or New Mexico's residents. Finally, Mr. Hoffman led the $1.3 billion contract transition for a new cleanup contractor widely recognized as the most difficult transition in DOE history; all accomplished on-time and on-budget.
Mr. Hoffman holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and Masters in Public Administration from Valdosta State University as well as Masters of Science degrees in Operations Research from the Air Force Institute of Technology and Strategic Studies from the Air War College.
