Description/Duties:

The mission of the Office of the Vehicle Technologies (VTO) is to develop clean, efficient transportation technologies that lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce petroleum fuel consumption of the U.S. transportation sector through planning, managing, and executing a balanced technology research, development, demonstration and deployment portfolio. This portfolio includes vehicle electrification and hybrid systems spanning energy storage, power electronics, propulsion subsystems and electric machines, advanced engines, lightweight and other advanced materials, heavy-duty vehicle systems, advanced and alternative fuels. 

VTO is looking to bring a technology manager to be part of VTO’s Batteries team. Technology managers support the research, development, and demonstration of high-impact technologies and solutions that enable the reliable, resilient, secure, and cost-effective integration of sustainable transportation on our nation’s roads. This position is supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and is focused on battery and critical mineral recycling. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Acting as a technical expert responsible for initiating and overseeing the planning of new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) and lab calls for vehicle technology RD&D projects with broad regional and/or national impacts, under the supervision of the Program Manager. 
  • Contributing to long range and ambitious strategic planning and defending findings and recommendations in public or high-level forums.   
  • Planning informational workshops, organizing merit reviews, briefing selection officials, and collaborating with contracting officers and related personnel on all facets of FOA and lab call planning and management, as necessary. 
  • Monitoring and evaluating technology area project portfolios to assure program and individual project performance goals are met. 
  • Ensuring that projects are up to date on quarterly reviews/reports on project status and that site visits have been made as warranted.  
  • Using technical and programmatic knowledge to recommend modification or cancelation of projects with award recipients and national laboratories to the program manager. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required to Perform the Work/Specialized Experience:

The battery and critical mineral recycling batteries technology manager position is open to general engineers and physical scientists. This position requires in-depth knowledge and experience in at least one of these technical areas: 

  • Battery and critical mineral recycling (a critical technical area for this position) 
  • Battery chemistry and cell technologies 
  • Battery recycling technologies and promising near-term approaches 
  • Scale-up of lithium battery technologies, such as no-cobalt/no-nickel cathodes 
  • Lithium anodes 
  • Solid-state battery systems  
  • Technologies that can enhance battery environmental sustainability 
  • U.S.-based circular lithium battery supply chain 
  • Other related technology areas
