Why this Competition?

Competing in the U.S. Department of Energy Collegiate Wind Competition (CWC) is a yearly goal for Texas Tech, which offers an undergraduate degree program in wind energy, because the CWC gives students the opportunity to learn about all aspects of the wind energy industry. In addition to putting participating students’ skills and knowledge to the test, the competition also provides rewarding experiences that go far beyond academics.

Project Description

The 2020 Techsan Wind team took what they learned from past competitions and plans to simplify their turbine components to allow more time for testing and refining.

Game Plan

Techsan Wind’s game plan is simple: commit to a timeline and remove barriers to completing competition tasks. This has been achievable this year thanks to improved buy-in from various university departments. The team is also involving more faculty and industry professionals to provide much-needed guidance, feedback, equipment, and lab space as students prepare for the competition.

Team Strengths

This is the fourth time Techsan Wind has competed in the CWC and having past competition experience represents one of the team’s greatest strengths. Another team strength is the students leading the team, whose past CWC experience and knowledge help motivate newer students to stretch their abilities. In addition, the team has engagement from all team members, which has improved the team’s momentum as the competition gets closer.

Team Hurdles

Several Techsan Wind members are graduating this spring, making graduation their primary focus. This opens the door for younger team members to assume more leadership as the spring semester progresses but has also been a challenge.

Competition Objectives

The Techsan Wind team is working hard to build a competitive turbine, and they have focused on breaking down the rules and objectives to maximize the points they can attain. They look forward to both competing and making lasting connections with the other teams at this year’s CWC.
