Lead Performer: Molecule Works Inc. – Richland, WA
DOE Total Funding: $199,936
Project Term: June 28, 2021 – June 27, 2022
Funding Type: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 1

Project Objective

Molecule Works Inc. will construct and demonstrate a prototype of a new air filter built from thin, porous metal membrane sheets. These sheets will be mechanically strong and rigid, thermally and chemically stable, and bacteria and virus resistant. The filters will meet or exceed the performance of existing HEPA filters, be inexpensive to construct, and possess a lifespan of five years or more.

Project Impact

These filters will be designed for retrofit into existing HVAC systems. Project success will improve indoor air quality in commercial buildings, while reducing material waste and capital costs due to their extended lifespan when compared to conventional filters.
