Congratulations to OCIO’s Pamela K. Isom and Wende Wiles and AITO’s Margaret Lentz for receiving the 2020 Gears of Government Award from the CIO Council. These awards recognize individuals and teams across the federal workforce whose dedication supports exceptional delivery of key outcomes in three areas: mission results, customer service, and accountable stewardship.

The team, Pamela K. Isom (OCIO), Wende Wiles (OCIO), and Margaret Lentz (AITO), implemented the Artificial Intelligence Exchange application (AIX). Part of the Innovation Community Center’s Innovation Exchange, the AIX manages AI efforts across the entire DOE campus. AIX is a system, dashboard, and database that the Secretary, Labs, and program offices have embraced to manage AI portfolios, exchange and collaborate on AI experiences, and plan future efforts. In addition, AIX provides a capability for external communities to collaborate and make key decisions regarding model and algorithm management.

Recognizing an opportunity to meet current needs and anticipate future requirements, Pamela, Wende, and Margaret prioritized outstanding customer experience, enabling all Labs and program offices to rapidly implement AIX. The team addressed both known and unknown requirements (e.g., keyword search) so that DOE could quickly identify work that is either planned or underway, and recommend and prioritize further AI advancements.  To date, over 600 AI projects are tracked in the AIX system.

Thanks to the team’s efforts, internal and external DOE stakeholders can cohesively manage AI portfolios across DOE, reducing duplication and redundancy. This award is great example of what we can accomplish when a team works together and executes a plan. Pamela, Wende, and Margaret – the entire OCIO team congratulates you and your exemplary contributions to the DOE mission!
