Sustainability is crucial to making the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) facilities and infrastructure better and more livable for the scientists and workers at the sites, improving performance for the taxpayer, and enhancing the communities in which we live and work.
In the Sustainability Performance Office (SPO), we see our role as assisting the DOE programs to achieve their missions by freeing up resources. This allows the programs to reduce waste and excess expenditure on energy, water and emissions; and improve the productivity of the commodities DOE purchases, facilities, and processes. By focusing on mission needs, the SPO assists the programs in finding ways to help the Department meet its sustainability goals as outlined in the statutory and regulatory requirements for all federal agencies.
