EERE's Weatherization Assistance Program weatherized a multifamily facility in Bridgeport, Connecticut, that provides safe housing for individuals, veterans, and the homeless received weatherization; the services performed have saved the facility nearly $7,000 in annual energy costs. Because the state had not yet received an approved multifamily audit, a local agency-Action for Bridgeport Community Development, Inc. (ABCD)-hired Steven Winter Associates, Inc. to perform an audit. This process included interviews with Homes for the Brave staff, onsite visits, energy assessments, and prioritized energy conservation measures based on energy paybacks. Based on the audit findings, ABCD performed the energy upgrades for the building and addressed health and safety issues, including improving indoor air quality, increasing domestic hot water temperature, ventilating the boiler room, and installing bathroom vents. The century-old, three-story structure has been occupied by Homes for the Brave for more than a decade. Under this program, the facility provides transitional housing for approximately 42 residents and services to homeless veterans to assist them in the transition to civilian life. With increased funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Connecticut, like several states, began weatherizing multifamily units for the first time.
The Weatherization and Intergovernmental Programs Office (WIPO) provides funding and technical assistance to its partners in state and local governments, Indian tribes, and international agencies to facilitate the adoption of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
