Director, Office of Nuclear Safety and Environmental Assessments

Kevin Witt is the Director of the Office of Nuclear Safety and Environmental Assessments within the Office of Enterprise Assessments (EA) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Mr. Witt is responsible for managing the day-to-day implementation of an independent oversight program that assesses the safety of high-hazard nuclear operations across the entire DOE complex. The assessments provide critical feedback and objective information on complex programs and performance designed to protect workers, the public and environment from the radiological hazards associated with Departmental operations.

Mr. Witt is a nuclear engineer with more than 20 years of experience working in nuclear safety. He joined EA's Office of Nuclear Safety and Environmental Assessments in 2016 before being selected as director of the office in 2020. Mr. Witt came to DOE after 15 years at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), where he served in various organizations including the Japan Lessons Learned Division, Spent Fuel Storage and Transportation Division, and Research and Test Reactors Branch. Prior to working at the NRC, Mr. Witt started his professional career as a senior reactor operator at The University of Texas research reactor.

 

Mr. Witt holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical/nuclear engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. He is also a graduate of the 2019-2020 DOE Leadership Development Program.
