Artificial Intelligence Advancement Council (AIAC)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announces the establishment of the inaugural Artificial Intelligence Advancement Council (AIAC), a first of its kind at the Department, leading artificial intelligence governance, innovation and AI ethics! The charter was approved by U.S. Deputy Energy Secretary David Turk on April 7, 2022.

The age of artificial intelligence and machine learning has arrived and is transforming everything from clean energy to healthcare, transportation and manufacturing. DOE is poised to lead in the future of AI because of its robust, innovative ecosystem. However, realizing the full potential of AI for the Department requires the combined efforts of internal and external partnerships with industry, academia, and government. The mission of AIAC is to coordinate AI activities and define DOE AI priorities for national and economic competitiveness and security. The AIAC members will have responsibility for providing recommendations on AI strategies and implementation plans in support of a broader DOE AI strategy that is led by the Office of Artificial Intelligence and Technologies (AITO).

The AIAC will consist of the following members:

Under Secretary for Science and Innovation (Co-chair)

Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of Security Administration (Co-chair)

Director, Artificial Intelligence and Technology Office (AIAC Executive Secretariat)

General Counsel, Office of the General Counsel

Director, Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence

Stay tuned for further details regarding the AIAC and the launch!
