The Radiation Measurements Facility (Building 4029) was used between 1959 and 1974 for the storage and use of radioactive sources to calibrate radiation detection instruments for the SRE and other reactor tests.
Constructed in 1958, the Fuel Storage Facility (Building 4064) was a vault, built to provide secure storage for non-irradiated fissionable fuel material (enriched uranium and plutonium) which was used to make reactor fuel.
The Old Conservation Yard (OCY) was used for storage and salvage of surplus equipment during the period 1956 to 1984.
During reactor test operations, it was often necessary to examine reactor fuel assemblies and other test specimens to determine how they were performing. This involved handling and examining highly radioactive items.
The Mechanical Component Development and Counting Building was used for sodium systems in support of the Sodium Reactor Experiment (SRE) from before 1959 until 1963.
The Advanced Epithermal Thorium Reactor (AETR) was housed in Building 4100. The AETR was used to study twenty different nuclear reactor core configurations by using an apparatus which supported a range of geometries.
Building 4028 was constructed in 1960 to perform tests on space reactor shields
Sampling at the nearby community of Bell Canyon was conducted in June 1998 to evaluate whether chemical or radiological contaminants had migrated from the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) into the Bell Canyon area.
