Stockpile Stewardship

Stockpile Stewardship is the comprehensive scientific and engineering program responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile in the absence of underground nuclear testing. Established in the 1990s following the U.S. moratorium on nuclear testing, this program represents one of the most sophisticated scientific endeavors in national security.

The program employs advanced computational modeling, non-nuclear experiments, and cutting-edge diagnostic tools to understand the complex physics of nuclear weapons and predict how aging affects their components. Through facilities like the National Ignition Facility (NIF), Z-machine, and supercomputing centers, scientists can simulate weapon conditions and analyze materials without conducting actual nuclear detonations.
