Session 4: Technology Scaling & Demonstration

We are just days away from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Clean Fuels & Products Shot™ Summit on April 8, 2024, from 11am – 2pm ET, and April 9, 2024, from 11am – 4pm ET. This two-day virtual event will gather stakeholders across government, industry, academia, and non-profit organizations to discuss the objectives, progress, priorities, and future plans for the seventh DOE Energy Earthshot™.

At the Summit, Session Three will focus on Carbon-Efficient Conversion Processes to address opportunities to develop new carbon-efficient conversion technologies, improve CO2 catalytic conversion efficiency through innovation, and processes related to solar fuels and using green electricity and hydrogen.

Speakers for the Carbon-Efficient Conversion Processes session include:

Keynotes:

  • Dr. Zia Abdullah: Laboratory Program Manager, National Renewable Energy Laboratory
  • Dr. Joel Tickner: Founder and Executive Director of Change Chemistry

Industry Panelists:

  • Dr. Kristin Powell, Chemical Industry Technical Consultant, DOE Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (Moderator)
  • Dr. Stafford Sheehan, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, AirCompany
  • Dr. Aanindeeta Banerjee, Co-Founder and CEO, ReSource Chemical Corporation
  • Dr. Christophe Schilling, President and CEO, Genomatica

Session Four of the Summit will focus on Technology Scaling and Demonstration highlighting demonstration scale facilities to de-risk technology for rapid industry adoption.

Speakers for the Technology Scaling and Demonstration session include:

  • Olivia Corriere, Portfolio Strategy, Portfolio & Risk Management, DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations
  • Dr. Andrew Sumner, Project Manager, DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations
  • Sharon Nolen, Program Manager and Fellow, Eastman Chemical
  • Jimmy Samartzis, Chief Executive Officer and Board Director, LanzaJet
  • Maressa Brennan, Portfolio Strategy, DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations

The Clean Fuels & Products Shot aims to lower carbon emissions from the fuels and chemicals industry by using more environmentally friendly carbon sources, targeting a minimum reduction of 85% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil-based sources by 2035. Additionally, the Clean Fuels & Products Shot aims to meet 2050 projected demand for 100% of aviation fuel; 50% of maritime, rail, and off-road fuel; and 50% of carbon-based chemicals by using carbon resources.

This Energy Earthshot was launched in May 2023 at a ribbon-cutting event with Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm at Idaho National Laboratory’s Biomass Feedstock National User Facility. It supports the Synthetic Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge and the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
