ANL Radiological Survey Group conducted a series of radiological measurements and analyses at the site of the former System for Nuclear Auxiliary Power-8 (SNAP-8) Experimental Reactor Facility for the purpose of post remedial assessment (certification).
The results of the radiological survey for Building 010 at the Santa Susana Field Laboratories are described. All survey results are below the applicable limits, indicating that this area may be released to unrestricted use.
In 1974, the SNAP 8 Experimental Reactor (S8ER) Facility at the Santa Susana Field Laboratories (SSFL) of the Energy Systems Group (ESG) of Rockwell International was declared excess to the government's program needs.
The SNAP Environmental Test Facility, also known as Building 24, was constructed in 1960 for the testing of SNAP nuclear reactors in a simulated space environment.
Decommissioned material (building debris) from buildings 4059 and 4024 has been sent to Kettleman Hills in full compliance with the Governor's 2002 Executive Order D-62-02. The material has been surveyed and verified clean by the Dept. of Health Services
This Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) has been prepared to fulfill the requirements of Section 300.415(b)(4)(i) of the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan (NCP) for a proposed non-time critical removal action.
The objective of the government-sponsored System for Nuclear Auxiliary Power (SNAP) program was to develop compact, lightweight reliable atomic electric devices for use in space, sea and land use.
Site Summary – Building 4009
Both the Organic Moderated Reactor and the Sodium Graphite Reactor were low-power critical experiment facilities. Building 4009 was originally constructed in 1958 to house both critical facilities. Although both the OMR and SGR operated from 1958 to 1967.
