Deputy Energy Secretary David Turk, EM Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Jeff Avery and Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) Assistant Secretary Katy Huff visited the Portsmouth Site last week.

PIKE COUNTY, Ohio – Ergonomics, the study of people's efficiency in their work environment, is paramount to working safely, whether in the office or in the field.

In 2003, EM created the Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) to focus on the safe and effective cleanup of the federal government’s two remaining gaseous diffusion plants at the Portsmouth and Paducah sites.

Members of Congress and their staff, DOE officials and others visited EM’s Portsmouth Site in recent weeks where they received updates on future use plans for the site as well as decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) progress.

Portsmouth Site recently held open house sessions in Scioto and Pike counties enabling the public to speak one-on-one with representatives from EM, site contractors and various community-support organizations.

EM’s Portsmouth Site recently achieved a cleanup milestone with the last load of X-326 Process Building debris placed in the On-Site Waste Disposal Facility (OSWDF).

Across the country, county fairs provide an opportunity for citizens to come together and build camaraderie. Each year, EM's Portsmouth Site joins neighbors in these local events as a means of community building and outreach.

Employees with Fluor-BWXT-Portsmouth (FBP), EM’s decontamination and decommissioning contractor for the Portsmouth Site, were recently treated to a luncheon, celebrating the completion of 4 million safe work hours.

DOE EM awarded the Portsmouth Decontamination and Decommissioning Contract (PORTS D&D) to Southern Ohio Cleanup Company, LLC (SOCCo) of Aiken, South Carolina for work to be performed at the Portsmouth Site in southern Ohio.

EM’s Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) recently awarded $14 million, or about 95% of the available fee to the prime contractor at the Portsmouth Site in Ohio for its performance in the first half of fiscal year 2023.
