This report documents the energy consumption of commercial refrigeration equipment (CRE) in the U.S. and evaluated the energy savings potential of various technologies and energy efficiency measures that could be applied to such equipment. The study provided an overview of CRE applications, assessed the energy-savings potential of CRE in the U.S., outline key barriers to adoption of energy-savings technologies, and recommended opportunities for advanced energy saving technology research. This report was modeled after an earlier 1996 report by Arthur D. Little Inc., and updated key information, examined more equipment types, and outlined long-term research and development opportunities.
