Excess Uranium Management

Request for Information

On December 8, 2014, the Department issued a Request for Information on the effects of DOE transfers of excess uranium on domestic uranium mining, conversion, and enrichment industries. The Request for Information established a January 7, 2015, deadline for the submission of written comments.  On December 24, 2014, the Department extended the comment period to January 22, 2015.

Notice of Issues for Public Comment

The Department issued a Notice of Issues for Public Comment (NIPC) announcing the availability of the comments received in response to the Request for Information and market analyses prepared for the Department.  The notice included a list of factors DOE had identified for analysis of the impacts of DOE transfers on the uranium mining, conversion, and enrichment industries, and a summary of information under consideration.  The NIPC established a deadline of April 6, 2015, for the submission of written comments.

2015 Secretarial Determination

On May 1, 2015, the Secretary of Energy determined that continued uranium transfers for cleanup services at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant and for down-blending of highly-enriched uranium to low-enriched uranium will not have an adverse material impact on the domestic uranium mining, conversion, or enrichment industry (“2015 Secretarial Determination”). That Determination is available here.
