Earlier this fall, the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) visited Milford, Utah, one of two potential sites for the innovative underground geothermal laboratory known as FORGE. The University of Utah, operator of the Milford site, successfully drilled a deep characterization and monitoring well earlier this year.

FORGE, or The Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy, will be a dedicated site where the subsurface scientific and engineering community will be eligible to develop, test and improve new technologies and techniques in an ideal enhanced geothermal system (EGS) environment.  Work performed at this site and the critical knowledge gained will facilitate access to 100+ GW geothermal energy in the U.S. alone and usher transformational change in the geothermal industry.

Check out the video! It gives a rundown of the activities at Milford, UT as well as a summary of FORGE and its tremendous potential for renewable, domestic U.S. energy production. And stay tuned for another FORGE announcement in spring 2018.
