LEXINGTON, Ky., Feb. 10, 2020 – The Department of Energy’s Fiscal Year 2021 budget request provides the resources for the Office of Environmental Management to continue making strong progress in the department’s cleanup mission across the DOE complex and in driving down the third largest liability to the U.S. taxpayer.
The budget allows the Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) to achieve significant progress in demolishing the X-326 Process Building, the first of three massive buildings that were historically used at DOE’s Portsmouth Site for uranium enrichment. The Department will also use funds from the budget to complete deactivating the X-333 Process Building – the second of the three giant Portsmouth uranium processing buildings at the southern Ohio site – preparing it also for demolition.
At Paducah, Kentucky, the FY 2021 budget will allow PPPO to complete remedial study fieldwork toward cleanup of the C-400 Building, a key step to addressing the largest source of contamination at the site.
