Veterans Event Expands Small Business Opportunities
The Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) hosted the Third Annual Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) Opportunity Day at D.C. Headquarters on November 12, 2019. This event focused on helping SDVOSBs work with the Agency to support its wide range of missions—from nuclear security to managing the largest environmental cleanup program in the world. The varied agenda included speakers from within the Department, the General Services Administration, the Small Business Administration, the D.C. Procurement Technical Assistance Center, and several SDVOSBs.
At DOE, 38% of our workforce are veterans…we think about our veterans a lot; we understand the value of their leadership in small business and in helping the Agency meet its missions.
DOE OSDBU Director Charlie Smith delivered opening remarks, highlighting the Administration’s success in fostering the use of SDVOSBs. The Department’s rate of SDVOSB utilization growth continues to trend higher than all other federal agencies, while DOE has also seen a greater percentage increase in Prime SDVOSB Achievement year-over-year.
The event featured several panels and Q&A sessions with program and site offices, such as the Office of Environmental Management and the Savannah River Site Office, as well as the National Nuclear Security Administration. Topics covered included the first steps towards success, a list of helpful resources for upcoming prime and subcontracting opportunities, and best practices on doing business with the DOE. The end of the day featured matchmaking to connect with buyers, such as Consolidated Nuclear Security, Oak Ridge National Lab, and the Department of Labor.
On behalf of the Department of Energy, thanks to all veterans for your service to the country; thanks to SDVOSBs for your continued service and for your efforts to partner with DOE; and thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s SDVOSB Opportunity Day a big hit!
