DOE OSDBU Director Charlie Smith kicks off an exciting and productive two-day Small Business Expo in Albuquerque, NM.

The Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) hosted the Summer ’19 New Mexico Small Business Expo in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 6-7, 2019.  Over 500 people attended this first-time event to help grow small business engagement and advance the Agency's missions.  It featured a wide range of speakers, including DOE senior leadership, state and congressional leaders, and executive leadership from Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.  The OSDBU chose New Mexico for the Expo, as the Department awards more small business dollars in New Mexico than it does in any other state.

We’re here in New Mexico, as Sandia, Los Alamos, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant collectively spent over one billion dollars with small businesses in New Mexico in Fiscal Year 2018.  In this New American Energy Era, I’m confident DOE will continue to gain from small businesses supporting the Agency’s missions by embracing new and smarter ways to advance our country’s innovation, our prosperity, our freedom, and our security.

The Expo focused on the importance of small businesses in furthering the Agency’s missions.   The Honorable Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty, Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), gave the keynote address, while OSDBU Director Charlie Smith delivered opening and closing remarks.  State and congressional officials—Timothy Keller, Mayor of Albuquerque; Michelle Lujɑn Grisham, Governor of New Mexico; Martin Heinrich, U.S. Senator from New Mexico, and Deb Haaland, U.S. Representative from New Mexico’s 1st congressional district—expressed support for small businesses in growing the economy in New Mexico and across the country.  Small business program managers from many of the Agency’s national laboratories, sites, and facilities, shared upcoming opportunities and best practices on doing business with the Department of Energy and our Management and Operations contractors (M&Os).
