The Plant Energy Profiler Excel, or PEPEx, is an excel based software tool provided by the U.S. Department of Energy to help industrial plant managers in the United States identify how energy is being purchased and consumed at their plant and identify potential energy and cost savings. PEPEx is designed so that the users can complete a plant profile in about an hour. PEPEx provides users with a customized, printable report that shows the details of energy purchases, how energy is consumed, potential cost and energy savings, and a list of next steps that can be followed to save energy.

Release Information

PEPEx (an excel version of ePEP) was released on March 9,2017. The excel version includes an improved user interface, streamlined data entry process, an improved report page and the ability to input data and display results in users preferred units.

System Requirements

This tool is a Microsoft Excel based tool that can be run locally on a computer. The system requirements to use the tool include:

Windows 2000, Windows Vista, Windows XP or Windows 7.
Microsoft Office Suite 2007 or newer.

PEPEx Scorecards

PEPEx determines the potential savings for various end use equipment in a plant by asking a series of questions about the setup, operating parameters, and maintenance methods used. The questions are broken out into scorecards and separated by the following system areas.

  • Compressed Air
  • Process Cooling and Refrigeration
  • Process Heating
  • Pumps
  • Steam Generation Equipment
