Senior Advisor

David Huizenga

David Huizenga serves as a Senior Advisor to the Administrator and Principal Deputy Administrator on programmatic and policy issues.

Formerly NNSA's Associate Principal Deputy Administrator, he was a member of NNSA’s executive leadership team. He is a recognized expert in nonproliferation and nuclear waste management, with over three decades of leadership, management, and technical experience in a wide variety of programs across the Department of Energy. He served as the Acting Secretary of Energy from Jan. 20, 2021 to Feb. 25, 2021.

Mr. Huizenga was previously the Principal Assistant Deputy Administrator for NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, where he managed the day-to-day operations of a portfolio of nonproliferation efforts that spans the globe. In this role, Huizenga managed the mission to detect, secure, and dispose of dangerous nuclear and radiological material and reduce global nuclear dangers by preventing nuclear and radiological proliferation and terrorism threats worldwide.

He previously served as the Acting Assistant Secretary for the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management. He was responsible for the management and oversight of the world’s largest environmental remediation program. Mr. Huizenga worked closely with state and local governments and stakeholders to drive effective assistance cleanup activities at cleanup sites across the nation.

Mr. Huizenga is well known and respected for being a consensus builder and team player both within the government and in the international community.

In recognition of his international credentials, Mr. Huizenga served as the President of the Fifth Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, a treaty administered by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Mr. Huizenga earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, both from Montana State University.
