The Source Physics Experiment (SPE) series and NNSA’s ongoing research and development at the National Laboratories strengthen national security by advancing technical solutions to improve the United States’ ability to monitor and assess foreign nuclear testing. The recently completed SPE Phase I experiments took place in hard granite, and the Phase II experiments, scheduled to begin in November 2017, will take place in a softer rock called dry alluvium. Learn more about the history of SPE and the National Labs’ involvement:
