NNSA has an annual award that recognizes the attorney who displays the highest standards of legal acumen and scholarship, integrity, ethics, and achievement that support the accomplishment of the NNSA mission. NNSA has named Mary-Ellen Noone, Field Office Counsel for the Savannah River Field Office, as the winner of its General Counsel Legal Excellence Award.

“All of Mary-Ellen’s accomplishments are due to her high level of professionalism and her ability to operate collaboratively with legal and professional staff throughout the government,” NNSA General Counsel Bruce M. Diamond said. “Her efforts demonstrate legal thoroughness, scholarship, ethical sensitivities and integrity. I am proud to recognize the achievements of this dedicated counsel.”

Noone received the award for her ongoing legal support of NNSA’s Mixed Oxide (MOX) Project and the Plutonium Disposition Program. She has provided in-depth, well-researched, and insightful advice and legal counsel, according to the letter accompanying the award. Noone balanced the workload of the Federal Claim Court cases associated with MOX while continuing to support numerous technical disciplines and a broad set of contractual, programmatic, and operational subject areas across the site.

She also has worked with the Department of Justice to develop effective strategies, motions, and legal arguments in response to multiple high-profile cases. Further, she has promoted a strong, ethical work climate.

Noone was nominated by the Savannah River Field Office Manager and the MOX Federal Project Director.  A formal award ceremony was held during the Annual NNSA Counsel Meeting on Oct. 10.
