NNSA lab recognized for innovation to power electric cars

The expertise and capabilities of NNSA’s labs are recognized for powering innovation in the nuclear industry – and now for powering hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. The recent 2016 Annual Merit Review Awards recognized significant achievements in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program. Researchers from NNSA’s Sandia National Laboratories and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory received the Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure Research and Station Technology (H2FIRST) team award for outstanding contributions to the widespread commercialization of hydrogen infrastructure, including the successful deployment of the Hydrogen Station Equipment Performance device, or HyStEP.

The primary purpose of the HyStep device is to measure the performance of hydrogen fueling station dispensers with respect to a set standard. The HyStEP device can save many hours and resources since each automaker will not need to send individual vehicles to every new hydrogen station to validate performance. It could reduce the time to commission new hydrogen stations from months to just one week, enabling adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology for more sustainable vehicles.

The team award recognized Joseph Pratt and Terry Johnson of Sandia National Laboratories and Christopher Ainscough and Daniel Terlip of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The project is funded by the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Fuel Cell Technologies Office as part of the Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure Research and Station Technology (H2FIRST) project.
