Ida HernandezIda Hernandez is the recipient of the eighth annual NNSA Office of the General Counsel Legal Excellence Award for her ongoing legal support of the NNSA Freedom of Information Act Program (FOIA).

Hernandez was influential in getting the Department of Justice   to seek injunctive relief to prohibit a local government from releasing sensitive federal information in its possession, including personal information about emergency responders. This precedent has received attention within the interagency as a seminal legal breakthrough.

“I am honored and humbled to receive the Legal Excellence Award.  This award has inspired me to continue to learn and grow as an attorney in order to better serve the agency.  I am always excited to learn new things, and the project that led to this award definitely challenged me and expanded my legal knowledge in so many areas. I truly enjoy the work I do because I feel a deep sense of teamwork when working with various program offices and other government agencies to accomplish a common goal,” said Ida Hernandez, Attorney NNSA General Counsel.

Hernandez also provided sound legal guidance to enable the protection of sensitive information from improper disclosure in the future. She was nominated by NNSA’s Office of Counterterrorism and Counterproliferation.

“All of Ida’s achievements are due to her high level of professionalism and her ability to operate collaboratively with other legal entities throughout the government. Her efforts demonstrate legal thoroughness, scholarship, ethical sensitivities and integrity,” said Bruce M. Diamond, NNSA General Counsel. “Ms. Hernandez’ contributions over the years have persistently supported the NNSA missions in the varied areas in which she has performed. I am proud to recognize the achievements of this talented litigator and legal counsel.”

Hernandez received the award in October during a ceremony at the Annual NNSA Counsel meeting at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
