“Gute Reise!” NNSA experts head to Germany for international computing collaboration

This week scientists and leaders from NNSA’s labs will share knowledge and rub elbows with the brightest computing minds in the world at ISC High Performance in Frankfurt, Germany. This industry and research meeting for the high performance computing community is hosted each year by ISC Group, the managing organization of the Top500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

The event provides opportunities for NNSA’s best computing experts to interact with the communities that drive technology innovation, development, and growth. Attendees include researchers and engineers from universities, national laboratories, and automotive, defense, aeronautical, gas, oil, banking, and other industries.

Because NNSA relies on high performance computing to help verify the U.S. nuclear stockpile without explosive underground testing, our national labs are home to technologists with expertise and a big stake in the future trajectory of the field.

The nuclear security enterprise is a driving force behind many of the fields of study covered at the conference: performance modeling and prediction, advanced disaster prediction and mitigation, challenges in extreme engineering, and extreme scale in practice.

NNSA’s Jacqueline H. Chen, Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at the Combustion Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories, will deliver a keynote for the conference discussing exascale simulation of turbulent combustion. Chen is the founding Director of the Center for Exascale Simulation of Combustion in Turbulence, which aims to use exascale computing to improve the combustion efficiency in transportation and power generation devices and develop more diverse fuel streams.

Other NNSA experts presenting at the conference include Dr. James Ang of Sandia’s Scalable Computer Architectures, Dr. Robert Clay of Sandia’s Scalable Modeling & Analysis Systems Department, Dr. Mike Heroux of Sandia’s Computing Research Center, Chief Technology Officer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Dr. Bronis R. de Supinski, and Emeritus Associate Director for Computation at Livermore Dona Crawford.
