Summary

The Department of the Navy (DON), with DOE as a cooperating agency, is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (EIS/OEIS) to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of alternatives for disposal of the decommissioned, defueled ex‑Enterprise (CVN 65) aircraft carrier, including its reactor plants.

In 2012 the DON prepared, with DOE as a cooperating agency, ‘‘Disposal of Decommissioned, Defueled Naval Reactor Plants from USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65)’’ (DOE/EA-1889). The DON issued a FONSI and decided, among other things, to remove the reactor compartments and prepare them for disposal at the DOE Hanford Site near Richland, Washington. The DON has since identified new preliminary alternatives for disposal of the ex-Enterprise.
