The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to the University of Central Florida Board of Trustees for a combination of field and laboratory data collection to document the prevalence, severity, and energy impacts of residential comfort system design and installation faults in hot humid and hot dry climates. Initial development of a study protocol and research plan would take place at the Florida Solar Energy Center in Cocoa, Florida. After initial development of the study protocol and research plan, UCF will work with DOE’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) to determine if the proposed research is considered human subjects research and, if so, will obtain IRB approval in accordance with 10 CFR 745.103 prior to initiating the proposed research in the field. Field data collection would occur in homes across the southwestern and southeastern United States, and in two laboratory homes in Cocoa, Florida. Data analysis would take place at Proctor Engineering Group in San Rafael, California.
