The Department of Energy is proposing to provide funding to the state of Arizona for the purchase and installation of two variable frequency drives (VFDs), including the replacement of one of the motors at well sites owned by the Pine- Strawberry Water Improvement District (PSWID). The VFDs would allow the pumps to do a slow start and more closely match demands by setting the speed to meet the demand, rather than always running at full speed, reducing both startup and total operating energy demands. An additional benefit would be that the VFDs would reduce disruptions on the water lines to the customers. The VFDs and motor were identified in an energy audit and engineering report as areas for improvement within the PSWID.
