The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to Pika Energy to upgrade the “Energy Island” inverter’s hardware and software to advance from a bench-level prototype with basic grid-forming (i.e. backup) capability to a fully-functional prototype.
Proposed activities would include the design, development, fabrication and in-lab and field testing of residential-scale electronics equipment for solar-plus-storage systems. These activities would be completed at Pika Energy’s office/industrial park in Westbrook, ME. This facility is equipped with an existing rooftop solar array, enabling on-site field testing. The proposed field testing activities would involve collecting power and transmitting it to power electronics equipment housed indoors for validation of inverter upgrades. This facility was designed for the type of research being completed; therefore, no modifications or new permits, additional licenses and/or authorizations would be necessary.
