U.S. Department of Energy Defense-Related Uranium Mines Cost and Feasibility Topic Report June 2014 Doc. No. S10859 Final Page 11.0Introduction This topic report describes the development of the potential cost and feasibility for remediation and reclamation of abandoned uranium mines (mines) as they relate to defense-related (former U.S. Atomic Energy Commission [AEC]) activities. In January 2013, Congress passed HR 4310, in which Section 3151 requested in part that “The Secretary of Energy, in consultation with the Secretary of the Interior and the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, shall undertake a review of, and prepare a report on, abandoned uranium mines in the United States that provided uranium ore for atomic energy defense activities of the United States.” That report is provided separately, but this summary topic report is one of five topics that are identified in the congressional bill.
