Today the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs (Office of Indian Energy) issued a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for $15 million to transition Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) to clean energy.
“Tribal Colleges and Universities play an integral role in cultivating Native American leaders with the experience, knowledge, and passion to pursue innovative pathways toward a sustainable future,” said Wahleah Johns, Director of the Office of Indian Energy. “By investing in our Native youth and clean energy infrastructure across these institutions of higher education, we are helping lay a foundation for the next generation of leaders to shape the future of energy in Indian Country.”
Through this FOA, the DOE Office of Indian Energy is soliciting applications from TCUs for:
- Clean energy project and curriculum planning; and,
- Clean energy technology and curriculum deployment.

Awards from this FOA range from $100,000 to $250,000 for planning grants and from $250,000 to $4 million for deployment grants. DOE anticipates issuing approximately 10 to 25 awards under this FOA.
Applications are due July 27, 2023, at 5 p.m. ET.

Through this FOA, the DOE Office of Indian Energy will continue its efforts to maximize the development and deployment of energy solutions for the benefit of American Indians and Alaska Natives. Between 2010 and 2022, the Office has invested over $120 million in more than 210 tribal energy projects across the contiguous 48 United States and Alaska. These projects, valued at more than $215 million, are leveraged by over $93 million in recipient cost share.
