The Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima) initiative is jointly sponsored by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office and Vehicle Technologies Office. Co-Optima brings together nine U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories and more than 25 university and industry partners to explore how simultaneous innovations in fuels and engines can achieve significant efficiency and emissions benefits—advancing the underlying science needed to deliver better fuels and better engines sooner.

Building on decades of advances in fuels and engines, the Co-Optima initiative’s three-pronged, integrated approach is providing American industry with the scientific underpinnings needed to identify and develop:

  • Engines designed to run more efficiently on high performance renewable fuels
  • Fuels designed to work in high-efficiency, low-emission engines
  • Strategies that can shape the success of new fuels and vehicle technologies with industry and consumers.
