Baton Rouge Magnet High School Team 1 will move on to the National competition

The Office of Fossil Energy’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve Project Management Office hosted the Louisiana Regional Science Bowl at the University of New Orleans on Saturday March 18.  The office has hosted the Louisiana Regional event for over 20 years.

The Louisiana Regional Science Bowl is part of the National Science Bowl® competition coordinated by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Since its inception in 1991, more than 250,000 high school students have participated in the National Science Bowl. The competitions encourage students to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.

The Science Bowl is a fast-paced question and answer contest. Similar to a sporting event, it is set up in a round-robin format in the morning, during which all teams compete against each other. In the afternoon there is a double-elimination final tournament to determine the winners. All prizes and giveaways are courtesy of the event’s sponsors:  Audubon Nature Institute, Centerra, Fluor Federal Petroleum Operations, Lauricella Land Company, Infinity Technology, University of New Orleans, and Vali Cooper International.

This year’s top four winners received trophies and prize money, and the top team will advance to the National Science Bowl®, which will be held in Washington, D.C. from April 27 to May 1, 2017.

Although Oak Grove High School actually finished first, it was determined their school did not fall within the official geographical area for the Louisiana Regional competition. Instead, Baton Rouge Magnet High School Team 1 will move on to the National competition.

Below are the top 8 finishers:
