In Case You Missed It (ICYMI)

Summer is officially here, and in the second quarter of 2019, the Office of Fossil Energy (FE) has been involved in a range of exciting projects and activities. We have made many commendable recognitions, welcomed the 24th class of the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) program, launched a brand new Appalachian Petrochemical Renaissance infographic, issued 10 funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) totaling $177.75 million, and made $63.1 million project selections under 4 FOAs.

Congratulations to Kimberly Rasar, Kenneth Vincent, and Angelos Kokkinos

Gears of Government Awards

Kicking off in mid-April, FE’s Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) of Operations Kimberly Rasar and Chief of Staff Kenneth Vincent received Gears of Government Awards for their outstanding performance. Kimberly received her award for her efforts in modernizing FE’s management, IT, and workforce practices to better align with industry best practices. Ken received his award for his work leading a strategic review of the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, to make needed improvements that would ensure it could continue to protect the country from energy supply disruptions. Equity in Energy

A few weeks later, DAS Rasar also took part in the inaugural launch of Equity in Energy, which is an initiative designed to include and expand the participation of individuals in underserved communities. In her panel discussion, ‘Department of Energy Program Leadership Overview,’ Kimberly aligned FE’s commitment to Equity in Energy with its strategic goals. Read more here.

Distinguished Achievement Award

FE’s Associate DAS Angelos Kokkinos held the honor of being the first recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award in Fuel Science and Energy Engineering, which was issued by his alma mater, Penn State University. Angelos was commended for his 40 years of work in important energy technologies, including coal power generation and emissions control, as well as solar power generation. Read more here.

Welcome 2019 MLEF Program Participants

With much enthusiasm, FE was pleased to help welcome the 24th MLEF program. The kick-off event was held at the DOE headquarters in the Forrestal Building. This year’s program participants include 50 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students representing 40 universities from 20 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

Energy Deputy Secretary Dan Brouillette represented DOE leadership at the event by welcoming the MLEF program fellows and congratulating them on their selections. Read more here.

News Updates

As a featured news highlight, DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and National Energy Technology Laboratory announced a joint agreement with ExxonMobil. Over ten years, ExxonMobil will invest up to $100 million in the two DOE Laboratories to advance lower-emissions energy technologies that could be brought to commercial scale. This agreement exemplifies DOE’s commitment to cross-cutting, result-driven research initiatives. Read more here.
