Dr. Michael Ardaiz is the DOE Chief Medical Officer within the Office of Environment, Health, Safety, and Security. Currently, Dr. Ardaiz serves as the chief Occupational Medicine physician for the Department in support of over 50 occupational health facilities which in turn provide health care to the 100,000 current DOE Federal and contractor employees, as well as over 60,000 former DOE employees. He is the principal advisor to senior level DOE officials on matters pertaining to occupational health, the Human Reliability Program, and public health activities.

Dr. Ardaiz has over 20 years of experience in the medical field, including over 15 years with of service to Federal agencies such as DOE, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) which recognized his response to the Pentagon on 9-11, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in which he orchestrated the medical screening of over 50,000 prospective checkpoint security screeners; academic institutions such as Johns Hopkins University  for whom he served as Medical Director of the Organization of American States (OAS) and Marriott Hotel in Washington, DC and Georgetown University Medical Center where he has served as an Associate Professor with responsibility for the education of medical students and residents.

Dr. Ardaiz is a long-standing member of the American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and several other professional associations. He has supported the development of such industry-wide medical standards as the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Medical Certification and Monitoring of Personnel Requiring Operator Licenses for Nuclear Power Plants (ANSI/ANS-3.4-1996;R2002;W2012) and ACOEM’s Guidance for the Medical Evaluation of Law Enforcement Officers. He has also supported the peer-reviewed literature through his own editorials and reviewed manuscripts submitted for publication at the requests of the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine (JOEM) and New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

Dr. Ardaiz has received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree (BS) with Honors from the Indiana University in Bloomington Department of Biology and graduate degrees from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He has completed residencies and achieved board-certification in two medical specialties:  Internal Medicine (IM) and Occupational & Environmental Medicine (OEM). The residency in OEM at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD was highlighted by a rotation with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in Washington, DC, an experience in the development and enforcement of occupational health policy which is available by application to a limited number of OEM residents nationwide. He has also completed training as a Senior Technical Safety Manager within DOE, in the Medical Management of Biological and Chemical Casualties with the Department of Defense (DoD), and Medical Review Officer (MRO) training for substance abuse programs with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
