Annual Photo and Haiku Contests

The Department of Energy (DOE) mission involves ensuring America’s energy security and prosperity through environmental stewardship. DOE celebrates Earth Day every year throughout the week of April 22nd.

DOE’s Earth Day celebration includes annual Photo and Haiku contests, which DOE employees and contractors may voluntarily participate in.

For the Photo Contest, photos are submitted in the following seven categories: Community, Comprehensive, Conservation, Energy Efficiency, Historical, Renewable Energy, and Resilience.  Winners are selected each year by a panel of DOE staff.

For the Haiku Contest, haikus are submitted that align with the annual Earth Day theme. Haiku is a short, descriptive form of poetry, usually read in one breath. Haiku poetry traditionally discusses subjects from the natural world, including seasons, months, animals, and even the smallest elements of nature - down to a blade of grass or a drop of dew. One winner is selected each year by a panel of DOE staff.
