Funding Topics for Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Programs

You are here

Each year, the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE’s) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs issue Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs), which invite established or new small businesses to apply for SBIR/STTR grants within specific topics that advance the missions of its individual technology offices. EERE topics are strongly connected with EERE’s technology areas and offices.

Within EERE’s topics, there are two types of subtopics: Problem-Solving Opportunity (PSO) and Technology Transfer Opportunity (TTO).

An EERE technology office traditionally asks small businesses to help solve specific technical problems related to achieving a programmatic R&D goal through a PSO subtopic. TTO subtopics begin with the objective of commercializing intellectual property from DOE-funded national laboratories (federally funded research and development centers) and research universities. Only one award is allowed per TTO subtopic.

Each topic/subtopic description in the published FOA also includes information on the maximum award for the phase and whether or not the Fast-Track award is allowed, optional, or mandatory.
